Music plays a structural role. The film uses Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 14 to signal the approach of doom. The characters listen to it in their Roman apartment, and as the quartet builds in intensity, so does their arguing. Garrel is a master of negative space—long silences where Bellucci simply lights a cigarette and stares out a window.
