The word 'Shaandaar' (pronounced shaan-daar ) isn't originally Somali; it's a loanword from languages like Hindi and Urdu, where it means 'splendid', 'magnificent' or 'grand'. As entertainment giants like Bollywood have a huge following across Somalia, through satellite TV, social media and streaming platforms, the word naturally blended into everyday Somali speech. It has become a go-to slang term for anything exceptionally great or glorious. When a Somali person says something is "Shaandaar", they mean it's top-tier, wow-worthy and absolutely fabulous.
Since the 1972 script adoption, the Somali Academy has worked hard to create native words for modern technology to avoid excessive foreign borrowing.
Websites like Fanproj , Astaan , and Musalsal often host high-definition versions.
The shaandaar changes subtly as you travel. The standard language is based on the Northern dialect (specifically the Maxaa Tiri ), but regional flavors enrich the whole.
