Following a catastrophic American firebombing raid, 14-year-old Seita and his 4-year-old sister Setsuko lose their mother and home.

Seita and Setsuko move in with a distant aunt. Initially welcoming, her attitude quickly sours as food rations dwindle across the war-torn country. She grows deeply resentful of the siblings, accusing Seita of doing nothing to earn his keep while eating their scarce rice. Unable to handle her emotional abuse and constant guilt-tripping, Seita makes the fateful decision to take Setsuko and leave. The Abandoned Bomb Shelter
