Operating in this space is inherently dangerous. In both India and Pakistan, the status of Mujra is legally gray. It exists in a loophole between artistic performance and obscenity. In Pakistan specifically, militant conservatism and religious pressures have made life extremely risky for these dancers. Many performers live under constant threat, and the industry is forced to operate behind the closed doors of "private theatres" or moving to marginally more liberal cities like Lahore to avoid crackdowns.
